Frequently Asked Questions

SSDI Benefits Calculator

Who qualifies for SSDI?

Workers with a medical condition that prevents substantial gainful activity (SGA) for at least 12 months, who have enough work credits (generally 40 credits, 20 earned in the last 10 years).

How is the SSDI benefit amount calculated?

SSA calculates your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME) over your highest 35 earning years, then applies a formula with 'bend points' to determine your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA).

How long does SSDI approval take?

Initial decisions take 3–6 months. Most are initially denied — the appeals process including a hearing can take 1–2 years total.

What is the difference between SSDI and SSI?

SSDI is based on your work history. SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is need-based and doesn't require work credits but has income/asset limits.

Can I work while receiving SSDI?

Yes, up to Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) limits — $1,550/month in 2024 for non-blind individuals. A Trial Work Period allows you to test your ability to work.
